Thermal resistance refers to the property of plastics that is heated but not deformed under external force. It can be measured by thermal deformation temperature or Martin's heat resistance temperature. The method is to immerse the sample in a suitable heat transfer medium with constant heating rate and measure the temperature at which the bending deformation of the sample reaches the specified value under a certain bending moment load. Martin's heat-resistant temperature and thermal deformation temperature measurement devices and methods are different. The application occasions are also different. The former is suitable for measuring the heat resistance of plastics whose heat resistance is lower than 60°C. The latter is suitable for measuring the heat resistance of rigid moulding materials and plates at room temperature.

Thermal stability refers to the properties of polymer compounds that are heated without degradation and deterioration during processing or use. It can press a certain amount of polymer into a certain size specimen at a certain pressure, and then place it in a special test device. At a certain temperature, it can be heated at a constant temperature for a certain time to measure its mass loss. The thermal degradation temperature of thermal stability is expressed by the percentage of the lost mass and the original mass, which is the temperature at which the macromolecule compounds degrade when heated. It is a measure of the thermal stability of polymers. It can be tested by pressure method or test paper identification method. Pressure method is based on the principle that gas is produced during polymer degradation, which results in pressure difference. Test paper identification method is based on the principle of discoloration of test paper caused by gas released from polymer degradation.

Flammability refers to the ability of plastics to resist combustion when exposed to flame or to hinder continued combustion when leaving flame.

Electrical properties of plastics

The electrical properties of plastics include dielectric constant, dielectric strength and arc resistance.

Dielectric constant is the ratio of capacitance of capacitors of the same size made of insulating material (plastic) and vacuum. Dielectric strength is a measure of the electrical breakdown resistance of plastics. Its value is the ratio of the breakdown voltage of plastics to the thickness of the sample, in units of kV/mm.

Arc resistance is the ability of plastics to resist deterioration caused by high voltage arc. It is usually expressed by the time required for arc flame to cause carbonization to surface conduction.
