The shrinkage rate of plastic parts is divided into actual shrinkage rate and calculated shrinkage rate. The actual shrinkage rate represents the difference between the size of the mould or plastic parts at the forming temperature and the size of the plastic parts at the normal temperature. The calculated shrinkage rate represents the difference between the size of the mould and the size of the plastic parts at the normal temperature.

The parting surface, pressure direction and the structure form, layout and size of the pouring system of the mould structure directly affect the direction of material flow, density distribution, the effect of holding pressure and feeding and the forming time, and have a great influence on the shrinkage and direction, especially extrusion and injection moulding.

Molding process conditions such as temperature, injection pressure and holding time of the mould have great influence on the shrinkage of the plastic parts. The die has high temperature, slow melt cooling, high density and large shrinkage. Especially for crystalline plastics, because of its large volume change, its shrinkage is larger, and the uniformity of temperature distribution also directly affects the size and direction of shrinkage of parts. The injection pressure is high, the difference of melt viscosity is small, the elasticity recovery after demoulding is large, and the shrinkage rate decreases. If the holding time is long, the shrinkage rate is small, but the direction is obvious.

Because shrinkage rate is not a fixed value, but fluctuates in a certain range, the change of shrinkage rate will cause the size change of plastic parts. Therefore, the shrinkage rate of each part of plastic parts should be determined according to the shrinkage range of plastic parts, wall thickness, shape, gate form, size and position forming factors. For plastic parts with high precision, plastic with small shrinkage fluctuation range should be selected, and there is room for repair. Mould should be gradually revised after trial to meet the requirement of dimensional accuracy of plastic parts.

Fluidity In the process of forming, the ability of plastic melt to fill mould cavity under certain temperature and pressure is called the fluidity of plastic. The fluidity of plastics directly affects the parameters of forming process, such as forming temperature, forming pressure, forming period, size of casting system and other structural parameters. The influence of fluidity should also be considered when determining the size and wall thickness of plastic parts.

The fluidity is related to the molecular structure of plastics. Resins with linear molecules but little or no cross-linking structure have high fluidity. Adding fillers to plastics will reduce the fluidity of resins, while adding plasticizers or lubricants will increase the fluidity of plastics. Reasonable structure design of plastic parts can also improve the fluidity. For example, the melt fluidity can be improved by using rounded corner structure at the corner of runner and cavity.

Plastic fluidity has great influence on the quality of plastic parts, mold design and forming process. Plastics with poor fluidity are not easy to fill the cavity and produce defects such as lack of materials or weld marks. Therefore, it needs a larger forming pressure to form. On the contrary, plastic with good fluidity can fill the cavity with smaller forming pressure. But the fluidity is too good, it will produce serious spill flash in the forming process. Therefore, in the process of plastic parts forming, when choosing plastic parts materials, we should select appropriate fluidity plastics according to the structure, size and forming method of plastic parts, in order to obtain satisfactory plastic parts. In addition, the parting surface and the pouring system and the direction of material flow should be considered according to the plastics fluidity in the die design. The fluidity of plastics should also be considered when choosing the forming temperature. The fluidity of plastics with good fluidity should be lower, while the fluidity of plastics with poor fluidity should be higher.
